The Canadian Chopin Society is a registered charitable organization dedicated to promoting the music of Fryderyk Chopin, while nurturing the development of young artists. Led by Dr. Janet Lopinski, President and Artistic Director, and dedicated committee and board members, the society is supported by a growing membership. In service of its mission to celebrate the legacy of Chopin, the Society organizes concerts, workshops, lectures and master-classes, and provides performance opportunities for young pianists. Every five years, the Society presents the Canadian Chopin Piano Competition, a national event that attracts talented young pianists from across the country. Top prize winners of the Senior division of the Canadian Chopin Competition receive funds to travel to Poland to participate in the International F. Chopin Competition, one of the oldest and most prestigious events of its kind. The second prize winner of the Fourth Canadian Chopin Piano Competition, Tony Yike Yang, was awarded the fifth prize at the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in October 2015, and became the youngest laureate in the history of the competition.
The Fifth Canadian Chopin Piano Competition and Festival was held August 23 – 29, 2019. Prize-winners included Eric Guo and Agnė Radzevičiutė.
Performer Biographies:
Eric Guo
Eric Guo, born in Toronto, Canada, on 1 August 2002 started piano at 4 years old. He is currently a student of Prof. John O’Conor in 3rd Year Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance (Honours) at The Glenn Gould School of The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Canada.
He is top prize-winner of international competitions, including the PianoTexas Concerto Competition, Minnesota e-Piano, Hastings Concerto Competition, Moscow Chopin Competition and Canadian Chopin Competition. He was the sole recipient of the 2018 Canadian Chopin Scholarship and was named one of the 2019 CBC 30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians Under 30.
He was a participant in the 18th Chopin Competition in Warsaw, Poland in October 2021 and was a finalist in 2021 XVII concours International Grand Prix Animato Chopin held in Paris.
He has performed at prestigious venues such as Salle Cortot hall and Bibliothèque Polonaise in Paris, Chopin’s Birthplace in Żelazowa Wola, the Chopin Museum in Warsaw, Krzysztofory Palace of Krakow Museum, Merkin Concert Hall in New York (aired on WQXR), North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh USA, Koerner Hall in Toronto, among many others.
He has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Fort Worth Symphony, Minnesota Symphony, Royal Philharmonic of UK, Russia’s Ural Youth Symphony, Italy’s Brescia Master Orchestra, Canada’s Drummondville Symphony, etc.
He was given artist recitals at Paderewski Festival in Raleigh and Krakow Piano Summer. He has participated in many festivals and courses, including Radziejowice, Italy’s Brescia, Italy’s Piano Academy Eppan, PianoTexas, Miami’s Frost Chopin, California’s Music@Menlo, Cincinnati's Art of the Piano, Philadelphia’s Curtis Summerfest, Seattle Piano Institute, Orford Musique, etc.
He has played in masterclasses for James Anagnoson, Emanuel Ax, Andrea Bonatta, Angela Cheng, Alvin Chow, Jeremy Denk, Dang Thai Son, Pavel Gililov, Krzysztof Jablonski, Kevin Kenner, Stanislav Ioudenitch, Boris Slutsky, Robin McCabe, Robert McDonald, Anton Nel, John Rink, Craig Sheppard, Garrick Ohlsson, Ronan O'Hora, Gilbert Kalish, Piotr Paleczny, John Perry, Ewa Pobłocka, Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń, Arie Vardi, to name a few.
Agnė Radzevičiutė
Lithuanian- born pianist Agnė Radzevičiutė has been praised by the press for her “sincere and meaningful” interpretations and “exquisite musical sensitivity and conviction” (Seven Days of Art). Her concerts in Paris and Vilnius were featured live on Mezzo TV, Europe’s classical music channel, and her performance credits include a solo recital at the United Nations Concert Hall in Geneva. Most recently, Agnė performed Chopin Concerto in E minor at the prestigious Koerner Hall, (Toronto, Canada) in the Finals of the Fifth Canadian Chopin Piano Competition. She was named the 3rd Prize winner, which included an entrance to the Preliminary round of the 18th international F. Chopin Competition, Warsaw.
Agnė's first international stage appearance was at the age of 10 on a tour in Switzerland. Since then performances have taken her to Belgium, Canada, Israel, Finland, France, Poland, Russia and the USA. She has performed Chopin and Mozart concerti with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, Kaunas Symphonic and St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra (Lithuania). On seven separate occasions, Agnė performed at the Vilnius’s National Philharmonic Hall, most notably in Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20, K 466 under the baton of R. Servenikas and the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra. She received distinctions from the President of Lithuania as well as the Ministry of Education for her “active performance career and representing Lithuania on the international stage”. In 2018, she made her United States orchestra debut with Chagrin Valley Studio Orchestra under the baton of Steve Eva.
Agnė graduated with valedictorian distinctions from the foremost art school of Lithuania - the Ciurlionis School of Art. The school orchestra toured Russia with Agnė as a featured soloist. While still in Lithuania, she was a part of the Rostropovich Foundation performers’ roster. She earned her Bachelor and Master Degrees in Music Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, where as a result of Academic Achievement she was consistently on the Dean’s List. Throughout the years Agnė feels fortunate to have had guidance from such esteemed teachers as Sergei Babayan, Michel Beroff, Jean-Philippe Collard, Philippe Entremont, Kirill Gerstein, Dmitri Levkovich, André-Michel Schub, Jeffrey Swann, Veronika Vitaite, as well as members of the American String Quartet.
Agnė has won prizes in a dozen international piano competitions, notably the First Prize at the International Fryderyk Chopin Competition for Young Pianists, held in Poland, Second Prize at the Kosciuszko Chopin Piano Competition in New York City, and the Prix de Piano at the Fontainebleau Festival (France).
Agnė is a graduate of the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, having earned her Artist Diploma degree in the studio of John Perry and David Louie.
