Michael Kras (he/him) is an award-winning Canadian playwright, director, performer, and magic director & designer.

Called “one of the important rising playwrights of the contemporary Canadian theatre ecology” (Colin Bruce Anthes, Essential Collective Theatre), he is best known for his play The Team, which won the Herman Voaden National Playwriting Prize and was a finalist for a PGC Tom Hendry Award and Safe Words New Canadian Play Award. The play made its world premiere with Essential Collective Theatre and Theatre Aquarius, and is published by Scirocco Drama.

Other notable works include No Big Deal, which made its world premiere with Roseneath Theatre; finsta, commissioned and published by Boca del Lupo; The Year and Two of Us Back Here, which has seen multiple productions in Canada and the US; and a how-to guide for the not-yet-viral, a new electro-pop chamber musical developed at Theatre Aquarius with composer Stephen Ingram.

He also has multiple new projects in development including rip it out of my THROAT, first created as Playwright in Residence at Essential Collective Theatre; The Start-Up, developed at Caravan Farm Theatre for the 2023 National Playwrights’ Retreat; and a new magic/theatre hybrid piece for Green Light Arts.

Michael is also an in-demand magic director and designer for theatre. He served as the Resident Illusions & Magic Associate for the record-smashing Canadian premiere of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (Mirvish/Sonia Friedman Productions); the Magic Director for the world premiere of The Extinction Therapist (Theatre Aquarius); and the Illusion Design Associate for A Christmas Carol (Florida’s Maltz Jupiter Theatre).
