Meighan West is a curious multi-faceted artist, always expanding her practice. She spent the past 15 years living and working in Toronto, ON until recently creating a home in Hamilton, ON. Originally self-taught in acrylic and watercolour painting, she moved onto graduating in fashion design and is currently finishing her degree in digital painting and expanded animation, with an interest in the film industry. She is inspired by female agency and the understanding of emotions, and human connection. She recently created a short film, Little Girls Past, that has been selected and/or nominated for 14 film festivals. This short explores the relationship between a young girl and her mother who has multiple personalities. While most films tend to focus on the person with the intellectual/emotional disorder, this film focuses on the child and how facing these personalities affects her. Often drawn to using the female form to express the emotional connections West is inspired by, she’s also a strong advocate for feminist issues. She has done an international speech with Amnesty International in Amsterdam on the subject matter of feminism in art, using her own art as well as other well-known artists as examples. As her works develop in the animation and film industry, she has motivations to start her career on the path of animation with a strong interest in production design as her career develops.
