Chris Erskine

Inspired by urban landscapes, I paint the feel of the City rather than its appearance. My work is characterized by large fields of flat, solid color that is spread across the canvas. This painting style avoids strong/visible brushstrokes often associated with the action painters like Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, and Willem de Kooning. Instead, my work favours consistent form and process that is more frequently seen in the creations of Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell, and Barnett Newman. As a result, my art practice provides a nice balance to the many gestural abstract artists working today.
