“Conversing with Dreams and Joy”

Featuring artists
Jangmee Park & James Paterson

June 15 – July 22, 2023
Opening Reception | Thurs. June 15, 2023 7 – 9 pm

With the incoming summer months, Earls Court Gallery is excited to launch an exhibition that brings colour, dreaming and joy to the community. “Conversing with Dreams and Joy” features new mix media collage paintings by Jangmee Park (Mississauga) and colourful wire sculptures by James Paterson (Meaford). Both these artists have chosen to look inward in order to look outward at our world.
Jangmee Park explores dreams and imagination as it is experienced by both the conscious and subconscious. In her paintings, the interplay of realist and abstract images represents the intentional versus the unintentional. These mediated images act as a screen upon which the viewer may project their own experiences and imagination.
James Paterson has playfully named his latest body of sculptures Engines of Joy. He cites that “after coming through the pandemic and all the dark ripples it sent into every corner of our lives, I was thinking about the way forward. I realized to make a certain decision, to be something, or choose to live a certain way – is a conscious choice. Thus, ‘I choose to be joyful’, regardless of my circumstances or what is going on around me. I see this as my way forward,” both in life and artwork.
“Conversing with Dreams and Joy” exhibition can be viewed in person at 215 Ottawa Street North, Hamilton. Earls Court Gallery is open Tuesday – Friday 10 am to 5 pm and Saturday 10 am to 4 pm. The artworks will be featured in the main gallery. All artworks will be featured online upon installation.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
JAMES PATERSON has been an “Imagineer” for as long as he can remember. Visions from the culturally diverse and visually textured Kensington Market neighborhood of Toronto, in which he grew up, have surfaced in the unique wire sculptures he is creating today. These ambiguous machine-like objects made of twisted bits of wire invite the viewer into a relationship through their moving parts, expressing ideas that are redemptive while attempting to give expression to mystery. Splashes of color add to the joy and delight of these whimsical wire structures employing a technique Paterson has developed himself.

JANGMEE PARK grew up in Seoul, South Korea and has enjoyed nature and music which are both significant influences in her art. After graduating with a B.F.A. and M.F.A. from Ewha Women’s University in Korea, she moved to Canada in 2000 where she continues to create paintings and drawings to visually express her feelings of the world. She lives in Mississauga where she is currently a resident artist at the Living Arts Centre. She is a member of the Korean Art Society of Canada and the Ontario Society of Artists. Her works have been shown in over 40 solo and group exhibitions in both Korea and Canada from 1992 to present.
