Founded in 2017 and incorporated not for profit in 2020, Hamilton based Open Heart produces site specific performance with a conscience. Our practise is centred around community engaged collaboration and committed to creating performances through storytelling, music and movement, stories about the amazing people in our city. The work we create is offered to you with an Open Heart, exploring stories about the human experience as one way of connecting us to each other.
We are invested in equity for all, across race, ability and class. We aim to be part of the anti oppression movement to create a supportive and safe world that is equitable for all of us. It is our intent that everyone feels invited, wanted, and welcomed to participate in our events and activities.
To create performances which manifest a view of the world that is positive, inclusive, and supportive, to encourage others to see the good that exists in the world with a welcoming spirit and through which all can benefit.
Performances with a Conscience. We see theatre as one of the tools for social change. Our work will encourage the heart to remain open and to take action in the world for the benefit of others.
Open Heart Arts Theatre has a special interest in:
Collectively creating works of art that allows the many voices of the city to be heard.
Questioning who gets to make theatre, for whom and where we make theatre.
Creating opportunities for creation and providing mentorship.
Encouraging meaningful relationships between artists, community, and audience members.
