Laura Trethewey is an award-winning ocean journalist and author of The Deepest Map, which follows the incredible race to map the entire ocean floor by 2030. Kirkus Reviews called it essential reading for environmentalists, armchair adventure divers, and those who care about the world’s oceans.”

Her debut book, The Imperiled Ocean: Human Stories from a Changing Sea, is a collection of non-fiction essays about what people do on and in the ocean. Her writing has been published and featured in The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, The Atlantic, The Globe & Mail, The Walrus, Smithsonian Magazine and Hakai Magazine. She received a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia. She currently teaches Creative Nonfiction at Sheridan College in Ontario.

In 2020, the Writers’ Trust of Canada selected Laura for a Rising Star Award. She was the Senior Writer and Editor for The Vancouver Aquarium’s storytelling website  Ocean.org  where she wrote and produced weekly videos about the sea. Beyond writing deeply reported literary journalism about the sea, Laura pens personal essays, travelogues, profiles and opinion pieces about travel, technology, sustainability, and community. She wrote postcards that she mailed from train stations on a month-long cross-Canada train ride, and an essay about the joys and dangers of living alone.

Laura currently lives in Hamilton, Canada with her husband and dog.
