John Highley is an accomplished glass mosaic and stained glass artist. He is currently exploring the patterns of life and how they express themselves together in nature and art. His glass mosaic work has recently explored the concepts of biodiversity, the interconnectedness of life on earth. His glass mosaics, sculptures and installations create visual reminders of the fragility and beauty of how plants, animals and life depend on each other. His work is displayed as sculpture in custom created stands, or hung on chains to flow freely on a wall, dangling behind light or in a window. As well, they can be displayed outdoors in the elements if secured appropriately, or covered in plexiglass display cases on stands. His work has a public art appeal and has been displayed outdoors in various settings in Hamilton and Burlington for the public to enjoy.

For the last 16 years, John has been focused on designing and creating mosaic glass creations of spiritual reflection, that he intuitively conjures from minute shards of coloured glass. Each piece is meticulously placed, contributing to the balance and structure of each original design. The finished product represents a meditation of colour and light. His pieces are both fluid and structured and illustrate the delicate and subtle interaction of colour, form, and light. His work is commissioned and sold in galleries such as the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery as well as art shows in Canada and around the world through his interactive website and online media presence.

My Work

La Sagrada is an homage I designed and created as a tribute to the inspiring windows in La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona Spain.

Peacock was a personal challenge I gave myself to create the most detailed mosaic I have made to date. I chose an abstract geometric Rose Window design to accompany a show I was doing at the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery.

This is a closeup of the detailed mosaic work I can create with tiny fragments of glass in my Peacock Design.

This is a collage of a group collaboration with A.G.O.G., a glass group I helped create in 2012. This peace titled Confluence I actually had a dream about, presented it to the group and we all made it a reality together. It was first displayed at the Carnegie Gallery in Dundas Ontario in 2014. It is now in private collection in Halifax Nova Scotia.

This is a collage of an outdoor Public Art piece titled Making Roots that I designed and created with local glass colleague and friend, Teresa Seaton. It is on display permanently outdoors in Maple Park in Burlington Ontario.

This is one of 8 pieces in a series I designed and created called Monet's Pond. Each is a cascading smaller piece than the one before it. The largest here is 21 inches in diameter and the smallest is ornamental in size only 4 inches in diameter. The is the final creation in the series.

This was a collaborative piece 3 years in the making from design, fabrication to displaying at the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery in Waterloo. Each of us 5 artists in AGOG created a section for this magnificent Rose Window titled Hope Grows.

This piece titled Monarch Dance was the first in a series of Biodiversity Themed Mosaics I created for the Burlington Waterfront Sculpture Trail tour in Spencer Smith Park, Burlington Ontario in June 2024. It is now in private collection in Burlington.

This Pinwheel was created by 5 artists including myself who were in the former glass group called A.G.O.G. Each spoke was created by a different artist. It is a fully rotating sculpture that stands 7 feet tall and is in private collection in Nova Scotia.
