Meaghan McLaughlin is a Canadian contemporary artist whose work explores the fluidity of perception of reality. She believes that each form painted is a representation of fragments of her own sensory perception in her environment. McLaughlin is drawn to those visual moments in the sensory world where one reality can be experienced in a myriad of ways between people and within ourselves. Seeing the world through manipulated perception like squinting, drunkenness or light distorted in a camera lens for example, reduces all subject matter to shapes and colours. She attempts to represent this experience through her work to mirror the fluidity of perception. Emerging from her work are strikingly colourful and figurative paintings with interpretive forms of McLaughlin’s own sensory world.

McLaughlin approaches her work with a mindfulness towards the dialogue between herself and her work. Noticing similarities between her creative process and a negotiation process where shapes and colours compete for space and attention under McLaughlin’s aesthetic choices.

Born in Scarborough, Ontario, CA, McLaughlin now lives and works in Hamilton, Ontario, CA. In 2015 she received her BA in International Development Studies and Environmental Sustainability from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, CA. Over the years she completed various studio arts courses across Eastern Canada. She attended courses at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 2014-2015, the Ontario College of Art and Design in 2017 and the Toronto School of Art in 2018-2019.
