Artist Statement
I don’t like the process to be too easy – the best works come from being uncomfortable.
– Deborah Wilkinson
This exhibition, Grounded represents a reimagining of my world, inspired by the shapes, forms, colours and compositions I encounter in my travels and everyday life.
The title, Grounded has multiple meanings for me: the process of painting is grounding, bringing me into the present moment – a reconnection to my thoughts and allowing me to tune out the external world.
I paint almost all of my pieces on the floor. Working on the ground allows me to be physically expressive and work intuitively, developing a deeper connection with the canvas. I’m able to walk around my work, relinquish control to the process and see it from all sides as I immerse myself in the subject matter.
Lastly, I am fascinated by seeing landscapes from the perspective of an aerial view – Mother Nature makes her own abstract paintings. This inspires the map or terrain feel of these works. They can be perceived as topographical views of the ground, puzzles of colour, shape and form that represent a journey to illusory places.
The show runs from Thursday, August 1 to Friday, September 6
