Artists Have Rights Too!

April 27 at 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free

Being an artist is hard. It’s a beautiful and satisfying job but there’s so much you need to know about the business of being an artist that no one tells you about. Whether you’re a visual artist, writer, musician, dancer, theatre maker … or something in between! You deserve to know your rights. Artists, like so many workers in this day and age, are expected to fend for themselves. We’re here to help make things a little bit easier.

In honour of International Workers Day WAHC is partnering with Solidarity Place and Hamilton Artists Inc to host an artist specific teach-in exploring the ins and outs on how you can better advocate for yourself and understand the resources that exist to support artists and independent contractors.

Erin Carr, Executive Director of Solidarity Place, will be on hand to discuss the parallels that exist between artists and gig-workers and unpack the legislation that is relevant to you. Sonali Menezes, Programming Coordinator, from the Hamilton Artists Inc will be digging into contracts and getting paid, health and wellbeing! And Cayley, from WAHC, will be giving a bit of a primer on May Day’s history and how it relates to artists.

This event is free and open to all. From the most part-time freelancer in the world to the established career artist - everyone is welcome. Bring your experiences, questions and ideas.

There’s power in numbers and we hope you’ll be able to join us.

A small reception with refreshments will be served following the conversation.

This event is part of Hamilton Artists Inc series, Working On It!
