gritLIT is now accepting entries for the 2023 gritLIT Short Story Contest. The contest is open to all writers living in Canada or Canadian writers living abroad. Here are all the details:

Submissions must be original works of fiction or creative non-fiction no more than 2,000 words in length. The theme for this year’s contest is JOURNEYS.

Submissions must be previously unpublished. Previous publication includes in a newspaper, newsletter, magazine, anthology, chapbook, book, or electronic magazine OR on a personal blog, Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook account. Submissions should be double-spaced and use a standard, 12-point font like Calibri, Arial, Times New Roman, or Courier. Accepted file formats are Word (.doc or .docx) or PDF (.pdf) Submissions should be emailed to no later than 11:59 PM on January 31, 2023.

Entry fee for the contest is $25. Within 14 days of submitting a story, authors will receive an invoice for this fee through Paypal. No story will be considered officially entered in the contest until the entry fee has been paid. All entries will be read by two or more preliminary round judges who will narrow the entries down to a longlist and then to the final shortlist. Preliminary round judging is anonymous. Please do not include your name anywhere in your story file. All authors are asked to fill out a cover page and attach it to their email entry. The cover page is available for download here. The shortlist entries that are sent to the 2023 contest judge will include this cover page.

The winning story and two honourable mentions will be chosen by the 2023 gritLIT Short Story Contest judge, January Rogers. Winning authors will be contacted by the end of March.

Authors of the winning stories will receive a cash prize: $500 for first place, and $150 each for honourable mentions. All three winning authors will be invited to read at an online event during the gritLIT Festival (April 20–23, 2023). If any of the three winning authors is unavailable to attend this live event, they will be invited to submit a recorded reading that will be included as part of the event. Authors of the winning stories agree to allow gritLIT to publish their stories on the gritLIT website for a period of up to one year. Copyright for the story remains with the author.
