Visual artist Barry Hodgson received his B.A. in Fine Art from the University of Guelph in 1978 and has been based in Hamilton since 1988.
Barry paints in oils on canvas and panel and makes works on paper with ink, pastels and watercolours. Landscape subjects dominate. With a focus on mark-making and composition, he makes finished work in the field as much as possible and then expands on these explorations in the studio.
“My work is a constantly evolving exploration of the relationships between my materials, my subjects and my intentions as a painter. Everything I have learned about painting so far is valuable but always insufficient. Each time I pick up a brush, I have to learn how to make THIS painting.”
Barry has exhibited widely in public and private galleries in Canada and his work has been collected in North America, Europe and Australia. He is a former instructor at the Dundas Valley School of Art and in 2006 was awarded a month as Artist-in-Residence at Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland.
Barry exhibits with: Earls Court Gallery, Hamilton, ON, Madrona Gallery, Victoria, B.C. and Ingram Gallery, Toronto, ON.
